Apple may still be working on a feature that Android phones have had for some time – reverse charging. According to sources close to the matter, Apple intended to launch reverse charging with the iPhone 14 Pro but encountered engineering issues that prevented mass production.
The feature was first introduced in Android phones by Huawei Mate 20 Pro in 2018 and has since been adopted by various Android devices. Apple’s interest in reverse charging can be traced back to 2019, as discovered during a teardown of the iPhone 11 Pro Max and a subsequent FCC filing for the iPhone 12 that showed the presence of wireless charging hardware but inactive reverse charging.
The MagSafe Battery Pack for the iPhone 12 also hinted at Apple’s intention to implement the feature. However, the report states that the company may still delay or cancel the feature due to difficulties in managing heat and charging speeds.
