Karim Azar, the Regional Vice President of Middle East and Turkey at Cloudera, says data helps identify gaps, enabling you to understand and rectify potential issues

Please tell us about your efforts to ensure a sustainable and equitable digital future.
We have implemented lighting controls on work areas and conference rooms, recycling & waste management programs and a hybrid work policy. With these measures, we have reduced our carbon emissions by 26%.

What is your commitment to combat climate change?
Cloudera is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. But the bigger lever is the Cloudera solutions that our customers use. With data analytics, organisations can track emissions across their entire value chain and examine carbon offsetting and circularity. Solutions for supply chain management are helping companies monitor and improve their supply chains’ sustainability.

What are the challenges in combatting global environmental issues?
Several challenges occur when tackling environmental concerns internationally. Primary obstacles include insufficient global cooperation, hindering unified efforts. Also, complexities in balancing sustainability with economic growth and resource management further complicate solutions. Addressing these challenges requires collaborative, cross-sectoral approaches, bolstering education and advocacy, fostering innovative technologies, and enacting cohesive policies worldwide to prompt collective action towards a more sustainable future.

What sort of trends do you foresee in the areas of sustainability and technology?
While everyone is seeking innovations and sustainability strategies, one key question is how or where to start. The simple answer is – data. Data helps identify gaps, enabling you to understand and rectify potential issues. Decision-makers can leverage data-driven insights and hybrid cloud solutions to foster sustainability. Data can help organizations understand their energy consumption patterns and carbon emissions, enabling them to make informed decisions, optimize their energy usage, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

How do you envision your role in shaping a more sustainable future in 2024 and beyond?
Besides our efforts, we can help our customers by leveraging insights gathered through data. Once decision-makers can analyze and visualize their data, they can identify inefficiencies. Understanding these inefficiencies can help fill in the gaps by reducing carbon emissions or waste, making eco-friendly choices, and fostering sustainable operations.

How are you aligning your sustainability initiatives with the themes of COP28?
Our sustainability initiatives align closely with COP28’s themes by prioritising data-driven strategies and collaborative efforts. We focus on reducing carbon footprints through advanced technologies.

By promoting renewable energy adoption and advocating for environmentally conscious practices, we echo COP28’s goals of global cooperation, driving industry-wide innovation and commitment to achieving Net Zero objectives for a more sustainable future.
