Lawsuit Filed Against Western Digital for Faulty Solid State Drives

1

California resident Nathan Krum has initiated legal proceedings against Western Digital, claiming that the solid-state drive (SSD) he bought from the manufacturer was flawed and failed to live up to its advertised capabilities. The lawsuit, which was filed in the federal court of San Jose, California, asserts that since January 2023, the Western Digital SanDisk 2TB Extreme Pro SSD, as well as other models like SanDisk Extreme Pro, Extreme Portable, Extreme Pro Portable, and WD My Passport SSD, have all been afflicted by an undisclosed defect. Krum is aiming to secure class-action status for the lawsuit, representing individuals across the US who have encountered comparable device malfunctions or data loss.

The legal document alleges that patrons of Western Digital have raised concerns about drive breakdowns and loss of data. Krum’s claim suggests that Western Digital has been alerted to this problem based on two efforts to rectify the firmware. These SSDs are purported to have erased stored data, leaving important files inaccessible. The lawsuit also contends that Western Digital has yet to provide a comprehensive explanation for these difficulties. In May, the company issued an update to address a firmware glitch that led certain SSD products to unexpectedly disconnect from computers. Nonetheless, a subsequent firmware patch only exacerbated the issues.

Per the lawsuit, a bug in the firmware update introduced in July 2023 forces the drive into a read-only mode, prohibiting users from creating new data or removing existing data. The bug can also lead to the drive being undetectable by the computer or displaying an inaccurate storage capacity. The complaint references accounts from individuals who implemented the fixes, asserting that the flaw continues to persist in specific Western Digital SanDisk and My Passport SSD hard drives.

Representing the plaintiffs, attorney Chris Cantrell remarked that it remains uncertain how many SSDs have suffered data loss. Nevertheless, a considerable number of individuals and media have reported similar complications.
