Review: Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen)

The Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) is a compact and affordable smart speaker that is part of Amazon’s popular Echo line of products. It is designed to be used with the Alexa voice assistant, which allows users to control their smart home devices and access a variety of other services using voice commands.

The Echo Dot (5th Gen) features a spherical design that is very similar to the 4th Gen model, but it is smaller and more compact. It is available in three colours – Glacier White, Deep Sea Blue, and Charcoal. The review unit we received was the Charcoal variant.

Inside the box, you get the Echo Dot (5th Gen), a white power adaptor (15W), and a Quick Start Guide. The Echo Dot (5th Gen) comes packed with a 1.7-inch front-firing speaker, which delivers clear and detailed sound quality. The speaker also has dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and Bluetooth connectivity, so you can easily connect it to other devices in your home.

The Echo Dot (5th Gen) has four buttons on the top of the device that can be used to adjust the volume, activate Alexa, or mute the microphone. However, the primary way of controlling this device is through voice commands. To set up the Echo Dot (5th Gen), you will need to download the Amazon Alexa app, which is available for both Android and iOS devices. You then need to link it to your account.

Once the app is set up, you can customise the device’s features and install additional “Skills” that offer additional functionality, such as Spotify integration, news headlines, trivia games, and more. Some users may even choose to install a Skill that tracks bathroom usage, called Poop Detective.

One of the standout features of the Echo Dot (5th Gen) is its improved voice recognition technology. The speaker uses multiple microphones and advanced algorithms to accurately recognise and respond to your voice commands. It works well, even if there is background noise or if you are speaking from across the room. This makes it easy to use the Echo Dot to control your smart home devices, play music, and access other services without having to shout or repeat yourself.

In addition to its improved voice recognition technology, the 5th Gen Echo Dot also offers a range of other useful features. You can play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Anghami, Spotify, and more. It also comes with a built-in LED light that changes colour to indicate the volume level, so you can easily see how loud the speaker is playing music. What’s more, with a simple tap you can pause a song or snooze the alarm.

The Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) is available for a very attractive price point of AED 230, which makes it a great value for the price. It offers high-quality sound, improved voice recognition technology, and a range of useful features that make it a convenient and easy-to-use smart speaker. Whether you are new to smart home technology or are looking to upgrade your existing system, the Echo Dot (5th Gen) is worth considering.
